I started making turkey calls in December of 2006 after several weeks of below zero weather and being bored out of my mind. I started with just a lathe at first and quickly realized I needed a band saw, drill press, router and several other woodworking tools.
Once I had a small wood shop put together I started making just a few calls at a time and testing them out. After much trial and error I started to make some pretty nice sounding calls. In the spring of 2007 I was fortunate enought to sell several calls, mostly to friends and acquaintances. Many birds were taken that spring and I knew I was on to something.
Over the following summer and winter I continued to try to improve the sound of my calls. I try to make my calls sound as realistic as possible. Since then I've been fortunate enough to win a total of 19 NWTF National Call Maker awards including the 2011 Tom Turpin Award.
All awards aside, the greatest joy I get is from hunting and harvesting a trukey with a call that I've made. In addition to that I enjoy hunting with friends and hearing stories about how other hunters have taken birds with my calls. What once started out as a hobby has grown into one of the major passions of my life. |
